Trust & Safety
The trust framework behind every FACETS purchase.
FACETS is organised by Sri Lanka's statutory gem and jewellery bodies. This is the framework that protects international buyers on our floor.
01
Buyer protection
- FACETS is organised by the SLGJA and the NGJA — the statutory regulator of the Sri Lankan gem industry.
- All exhibitors are verified SLGJA or NGJA members before being granted a booth.
- The NGJA operates a gem testing laboratory on-site during the event — buyers can request independent testing.
- FACETS does not facilitate financial transactions. All purchases are between buyer and exhibitor. Always request a proper invoice and certificate for every purchase.
- FACETS accepts no liability for private transactions between exhibitors and visitors.
02
Gem certification guidance
Reputable laboratories accepted by international buyers:
- —GIA — Gemological Institute of America
- —AGL — American Gemological Laboratories
- —GRS — Gem Research Swisslab
- —Gübelin Gem Lab
- —SSEF Swiss Gemmological Institute
- —NGJA — statutory Sri Lankan certificate, legally recognised for export
- Request a certificate for any stone above a meaningful value — a useful threshold is USD 500.
- Verify the certificate matches the stone physically — reference number, weight, dimensions and description.
- Be cautious of certificates from unrecognised laboratories. Ask your exhibitor to explain their certification process.
03
Exhibitor verification
- All exhibitors at FACETS 2027 are verified SLGJA or NGJA members.
- International exhibitors are subject to export documentation review prior to participation.
- Exhibitor membership status can be confirmed with the FACETS organising team at the information desk.
- If you have concerns about an exhibitor's credentials, approach the FACETS team before making a purchase.
04
Export & customs basics
- Sri Lanka permits the export of gems and jewellery subject to NGJA export documentation.
- Buyers purchasing gems for export should request an NGJA export permit from their exhibitor — required at customs.
- Gem exports are subject to an export levy. The rate varies by gem type and value; your exhibitor should advise.
- Customs rules in your destination country apply. Buyers are responsible for checking import duties and documentation requirements in their home country.
- The EU, UK, US and Australia have specific declaration requirements for gem and jewellery imports above certain values.
- For high-value purchases, FACETS recommends using a registered gem export agent. The NGJA can provide a list of licensed agents.
